Volkswagen Taigun Concept Crossover Debuting

Volkswagen has jumped on the subcompact SUV train with a new concept revealed at the Sao Paulo motor show in Brazil. Shown in vibrant Seaside Blue paint, the four-seat Taigun SUV looks like a shrunken Tiguan, and is the newest addition to the automaker’s flexible, compact, front-drive platform
At 152 inches long, 68 inches wide, and 62 inches tall, the Taigun is about 22 inches shorter in length, 3 inches slimmer, and 5 inches shorter in height compared to the Tiguan. The wheelbase is 5 inches shorter, and just as the Taigun’s proportions have shrunk in relation to the Tiguan, so has its hardware. The Taigun is powered by Volkswagen’s new direct-injection 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, which puts out 108 hp and 129 lb ft. The German automaker says the 2172-pound CUV has a top speed of 116 mph, and can reach 0-62 mph in 9.2 seconds. Volkswagen says the Taigun can handle off-road terrain, though it’s not clear whether a production version of the car would offer front- or all-wheel drive.
Equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, the Taigun is unmistakably VW, with bold wheel arches, short overhangs, and roof rails with integrated LED spotlights. Around back, the Taigun sports a new two-part tailgate, in which one door swings upward, and the other downward. Inside, VW says the tech-savvy Taigun will cater to those with smartphones and tablets. Dials in the air vents control temperature and air speed.
If a production-ready version of the Volkswagen Taigun were ever produced, competitors could include the Mini Countryman and Nissan Juke, plus the Chevrolet Trax in other markets.
